Influence of controlled ambient temperatures and diets on the incidence of esophagogastric ulcers in swine.

چکیده
A N indication that seasonal variation may influence the incidence of esophagogastric ulcers in swine has been reported by Kowalczyk et al. (1960), Kowalczyk and Muggenburg (1963) and Curtin et al. (1963). More ulcers and deaths due to ulcer were observed during the spring and winter months. The possibility that the temperature changes which occurred during this time were placing an increased stress on the animal is one explanation. The ulcerogenic effect of stress on man and laboratory animals has been characterized (Gray et al., 1956; Bonta, 1965). The stress response causes an increased adrenal activity which influences gastric secretion of hydrochloric acid and pepsin production. Also gastro-intestinal ulceration is an integral part of the alarm reaction in stress. The protective action of ascorbic acid in ulcer production and relationship to stress in rat and man has been reported by Freeman and Hafkesbring (1954) and Doss (1965). The objective of the research reported in this paper was to test the effects of temperature as a stressor on the incidence of esophagogastric ulcers in pigs fed raw or expanded corn. The level of plasma ascorbic acid was also determined to see if the ulcer formation might be associated with lowered ascorbic acid levels.

E SOPHAGOGASTRIC ulcers in swine have attracted the attention of swine producers and scientists in recent years because of their apparent increased frequency of occurrence or because of increased awareness of the condition. Various studies and surveys have shown from about 1% (Hoorens et al., 1965) to 55% (Perry et al., 1963) incidence of esophagogastric ulcers in swine. If one considers the va...
متن کاملInfluence of Surfactant Type, Surfactant Concentration, and Salinity on Interfacial Tension of a Brine/Live Oil/Surfactant Fluid System: A Case Study of Iranian Asmari Oil Reservoir
The chemical surfactant flooding can mobilize the trapped oil by lowering the interfacial tension between oil and brine and in some cases altering the reservoir rock wettability. In this work, the effect of surfactants on oil/brine interfacial tension was experimentally investigated. First, the effect of surfactants concentration was surveyed. Afterwards, the effect of salinity on surfactant be...
متن کاملCOMPARISON OF INCIDENCE AND GRADE OF PRESSURE ULCER IN SMOKERS AND NON-SMOKERS ADMITTED TO INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
Background & Aims: Pressure ulcer is a serious problem in patients admitted to the intensive care unit. It is associated with major complications such as prolonged length of stay and delayed recovery. The aim of this study was to compare the incidence and grade of pressure ulcers in smokers and non-smokers admitted to the intensive care unit. Materials & Methods: This study is an analytical cr...
متن کاملEffect of diet particle size and feeding of H2-receptor antagonists on gastric ulcers in swine.
Four experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of diet and the administration of H2-antagonists in feed on gastric ulcer formation and performance of growing-finishing swine. Pigs receiving a finely ground diet (less than lmm) grew faster (.73 vs .68 kg/d, P less than .01) and had better feed utilization (3.47 vs 3.76, P less than .01) than pigs receiving a cracked corn-based diet. Inci...

One of the most common complications of diabetes is diabetic foot ulcer, which exposes patients to wound infection, osteomyelitis, and lower-limb amputation if left untreated. Therefore, accurate and rapid diagnosis of wound and osteomyelitis infection is an important step in treating this debilitating complication. In this regard, the present study was aimed to determine the incidence of osteo...
